PREGNANCY

Congratulations to all you would-be mothers. Here are a few things that you should know regarding your teeth and mouth during pregnancy.

  • Due to the increased levels of estrogen during pregnancy all the arteries (blood vessels containing oxygen rich blood) will widen to improve circulation. This may cause bleeding gums and/or nose bleeds. It is important though not to get a fright when this happens. It does not mean that there is anything wrong. Ignore this and continue with your normal oral hygiene routine. This happens in more or less 50 percent of woman.

  • Taking calcium supplements will not protect your teeth as much as you think – rather improve your oral hygiene routine. The calcium supplements you take will help the development of your baby’s bone structure.

  • Unfortunately only paracetamol can be taken for pain.

  • The only antibiotic to take, that is safe, is penicillin but not augmentin (due to clavulanic acid). Your dentist will make sure not to prescribe anything that is harmful to your baby.

  • The safest time during pregnancy to have dental treatment is during the second trimester.

  • X-rays and pregnancy: With the latest x-ray equipment, scattering of radiation is minimized. This means that intra oral x-rays are very well focused on a specific area and there for radiation is limited to the head and neck area. X-rays in pregnant woman can be taken but only if it is absolutely necessary and if a lead apron is worn. Lead blocks radiation. Digital x-rays will only expose you to 25% of the radiation caused by old conventional x-rays. This is due to much shorter exposure time.

  • Do not take fluoride tablets. Your baby’s primary teeth are developing whilst in the uterus however there is enough fluoride in the water that we drink to aid in making your baby’s teeth strong. You, as a mom-to-be, must rinse your mouth daily with a fluoride containing mouthwash.

  • It is important to see your oral hygienist every three months whilst pregnant as you are more susceptible to gum infection.

  • Finally it is important to take good care of yourself especially your mouth.
