DERMAL FILLERS
The following areas can successfully be treated with dermal filler to smooth out wrinkles, making the skin appear younger:
The most commonly used is Hyaluronic Acid (HA).
HA is naturally present in the skin and is the main component of skin structure that helps hydrate skin tissues and it fills the space between fibres and cells.
It is capable of binding large quantities of water which provides the skin with bulk and cushioning.
HA is produced naturally in all organisms, importantly, HA is HA no matter which organism produces it, this means that HA can be injected between species, without causing any allergic reactions.
HA is harvested from the bacterium Streptococcus equi and is also pharmaceutical grade and conforms to all US and EU standards, thus associated with very low incidence of allergic reactions.
It is a clear jelly-like substance that is injected into the skin to treat wrinkles, fine lines (static lines) and other signs of aging on the face.
Filler is given via small injections into the specific areas to be treated. The results are immediately noticeable but the full effect can only be seen after two weeks. This is due to the filler’s hydrophilic qualities.
The effect is area and product dependent, but will usually last from one year up to three years. In areas with a lot of muscle movement the filler tend to dissipate quicker. Higher viscosity fillers will last longer but are only indicated in certain areas.
Apart from having volume in itself the dermal filler absorbs water (is hydrophilic) and draws water into the cells in which it has been injected. This improves the hydration of the skin and plumps the cells.
Temporary bruising and swelling may occur at the site of injection; however this normally disappears within 24 hours and settles to create the desired effect.
Avoid rubbing treated area for 1 week. Filler can be dislodged from its intended position when rubbing the skin too aggressively.
Dermal filler is quoted per 0.1ml used. This varies according to the area treated and is affected by the amount of tissue loss. This varies from patient to patient. The normal dosages are as follows:
