PERIODONTITIS

Periodontitis can be defined as the loss of bone connective tissue around one or more teeth. It is caused by a very aggressive bacteria which is hard to get rid of. The early onset of this disease can be identified by continues bleeding gums called ginigivitis.

These pictures show the gradual decline from normal healthy gums to advanced periodontitis. The patient is unable to clean his/her teeth properly. The deepened pocket creates the ideal situation for  bacteria to multiply and eventually the situation will snowball out of control.

 

Periodontitis causes:

 

  • Bad breath
  • Bleeding gums
  • Anything from slight discomfort to severe pain.
  • Loosened teeth
  • Tooth loss
  • The continues release of bacteria in the blood stream.

 

 

Predisposing factors:

 

  • Hereditary
  • Smoking
  • Poor oral hygiene.
  • Poorly filled teeth, especially with silver fillings.
  • Continues food impaction problems.
