INTERNAL BLEACHING

The two main causes of the so called ‘blue tooth’ are:

Trauma – caused by the tearing off of the nerve- and blood supply to the tooth.

Root canal treatment – sometimes some of the blood products stay behind after a root canal treatment has been done which in turn will eventually discolor the tooth.

There is an alternative, non-invasive and cheaper way to get the normal color of the tooth back called ‘Internal bleaching’. This is achieved by removing part of the old root canal filling and placement of a bleaching agent on the inside.

A few days later the bleaching agent is removed and the hole is filled up. This is a pain free procedure.

The picture above shows us the main causes of discoloring in non-vital teeth (root canal treated teeth). Blood products like red blood cells will cause a pinkish color and by-products like iron sulfide will cause a grayish color. Pinkish and grayish discoloring can be avoided by your dentist. Unfortunately root canal treated teeth will most of the time become a darker shade of yellow as time passes.
