FAQ

You suffer from any neuromuscular disease Pregnant or breast feeding You are using blood thinners e.g.: Warfarin There is a presence of infection or inflammation at the proposed injection site. Redness, swelling and bruising at site of injection (20 minutes) Headaches may occur within 12 hours of treatment. Ptosis, drooping of upper eyelid, is a rare side effect and technique dependant. Eye drops are available to mostly counteract ptosis. Asymmetrical effect – this is where one side ends up in a different position than the other. This is due to the muscles in the face being asymmetrical in strength. This problem is easily corrected by a follow up visit after 2-3 weeks. Try to exercise your treated muscles for 2-3 hours after treatment. This helps to work the Botulinum toxin into the muscle. This will NOT impact your treatment negatively if you forget to do this. Do NOT rub or massage the treated areas for 24 hours after your treatment. Do NOT apply make-up for 4 hours after your treatment. Do NOT lie down or do strenuous exercise for 4 hours after treatment, Feel free to shower and go about most other regular daily activities. Be assured that any tiny bumps and marks will go away within a few hours after treatment. No alcohol for 24 hours No blood thinning medication like Disprin and Ibuprofen Botulinum Toxin A is quoted per unit used. This varies according to the area treated and the sex of the client. Men on average use 1.5x more Botulinum Toxin A than women as they have greater muscle bulk. The normal dosages are as follows: Forehead-20 units Frown-25 units Crow’s feet-6 – 8 units per side Bunny lines 4 - 12 units (on the nose bridge) Bruxism (Grinding of teeth - 13 units per side) Botulinum Toxin Type A is a complex purified protein produced by the bacteria Clostridium Botulinum of the A strain. How does it work? A tiny amount of Botulinum Toxin A injected into the muscle, blocks nerve impulses only in the injected area thus relaxing the muscle. The muscle cannot contract to cause a crease in the skin (wrinkle) thus giving a smoother appearance. Botulinum Toxin A only works on dynamic wrinkles (wrinkles only caused by muscle contraction i.e. frowning), not static lines (permanent lines regardless of muscle contraction.) Will my face be expressionless afterwards? The golden rule: Never over correct – always start with a minimum amount. It is easier to add and impossible to subtract. This method of injecting will leave your face smoother and yet allow for facial expression. I have heard that some doctors use generic botulinum toxin A and “water down” the solution to save money? At Nautilus Dental we only use FDA approved Botulinum toxin A that has been reconstituted to the correct strength.
